For the third consecutive year, OPPC provided a camp experience for children in refugee families that have resettled in NE Florida.  The camp day field trip is an incentive for the kids to attend the summer “International Summer Academy” where they continue to learn and practice English, reading and math while engaging in fun activities.  This year’s campers were mostly from Afghanistan, Honduras and Ukraine.  The students were bused from Jacksonville to Camp Montgomery where they were greeted with a breakfast snack.  After changing into swim wear, they spent the rest of the morning in the lake, jumping and splashing.  A bagged lunch was provided then the students were split into two groups for archery and wall-climbing.  Before getting back on the bus, they received another snack with fruit, chips and string cheese.  We fund all this, plus pay for the school staff’s time supervising, for less than $50 per student.  They may be slow getting on the bus each day for the school program, but they were ready extra early for the field trip to Camp Montgomery, where they strengthened relationships and built new understanding of an American tradition:  camp. This field trip is usually the highlight of the summer for each student.
